José Altuve had to convince the Houston Astros he deserved a chance before becoming one of baseball's most accomplished second basemen. In 2007, the Venezuelan infielder signed with the organization for a $15,000 bonus. Ten years later, he won the American League Most Valuable Player award.
At the time, Altuve's height made some evaluators hesitant to give him an opportunity. However, Alfredo "Al" Pedrique, the Astros' talent evaluator in Venezuela, believed the teenager's hitting ability, speed and work ethic outweighed concerns about his size.
The organization had previously turned Altuve away from its Venezuelan academy, but he continued pursuing his opportunity. Pedrique eventually persuaded the Astros to sign him, securing a modest bonus that reflected the doubts surrounding the young infielder.
According to a retrospective published by La Vida Baseball , Pedrique played a crucial role in convincing the organization to take a chance on Altuve. The decision became one of the most rewarding investments in the franchise's history.
Altuve rewarded that belief through consistent production as he progressed toward the major leagues. By 2017, he had established himself as one of the American League's leading hitters.
That season, Altuve batted .346 with 24 home runs, 81 RBIs and 32 stolen bases. He also recorded 204 hits, leading the American League in the category for the fourth consecutive season.

His performance earned him the 2017 AL MVP award, receiving 27 of 30 first-place votes and 405 points to finish ahead of New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who received 279 points. The CBS Sports report on the MVP voting detailed the decisive margin.
Altuve's individual achievement came during a landmark season for Houston. The Astros won their first World Series championship that November, completing a turnaround that had taken years to build.
The $15,000 signing bonus that once reflected uncertainty about Altuve's potential ultimately preceded an MVP season and a championship. Pedrique's willingness to look beyond physical stature helped give the Astros a player who would become central to their success.
