Purdue delivered a dominant, complete-game performance at Ross-Ade Stadium, overpowering Minnesota 41–13 to secure their second consecutive Big Ten victory. From the opening kickoff, the Boilermakers set the tone on both sides of the ball, establishing control at the line of scrimmage and building a comfortable lead they never relinquished.
Let's jump into the post-game press conferences for Purdue Head Coach Barry Odom and select players.
Right off the bat, Odom mentions how well all three phases of the game played together. In terms of an overall game in that regard, I'm not sure Purdue has played that well since 2022. The offense didn't put the defense in any bad spots while the defense allowed the offense ample opportunities to work with good field position. The offense accumulated 458 total yards while the defense allowed just 273 but more importantly is the 26 of total rushing yards that were surrendered. To put that into context, the Boilers last had that kind of dominating presence on defense back in 2004 against Penn State.
Odom was very happy with how Purdue's offense was able to stay on schedule all night. That is largely because of how well offensive line was able to control the line of scrimmage and stay ahead of the chains. All night, Purdue only had two instances of 3rd and longs and those were both 3rd and 9. Purdue nearly converted the first in the first quarter but the drive ended on 4th and 1 when Harris couldn't get the yard they needed. The other was during Purdue's second drive of the second half where they went 3 and out.Being able to be in those situations allows Offensive Coordinator Josh Henson full use of the playbook and keep the defense on their toes.
Purdue's defense the last two weeks has looked nothing like it did over the previous four weeks. To his credit, Barry Odom stuck his neck for Defensive Coordinator Kevin Kane following an embarrassing result against Notre Dame when he said that improvements were made. When the defense gives up 444 yards and 49 points while the Irish seemed to barely break a sweat, those comments seemed way out of left field, but Barry has a better read on his team than anyone else (I'll be the first to admit I was pretty quick to call for Kane to be let go following that ND game).
One of the things that Purdue really needs improvement on over the second half of the season defensively is they need to generate more sacks and tackles for loss. The defense has only 7 sacks on the season and that only accounts for a shade over 1 per game. The Boilers didn't get any sacks against Drake Lindsey and only applied 2 QB hurries but very rarely were out of position and often times had multiple defenders making tackles. Purdue has got to see their defensive lineman start winning upfront and getting home to the quarterback if they want to extend this current two game winning streak they are on.To speak more on those 7 sacks, that places Purdue tied for 2nd worst in the B1G as they are tied with MSU and ahead of Illinois (6). Indiana currently leads the B1G with 20.
Minnesota did enter the game with 14 sacks and a defensive line that had been playing really well through 5 games. Purdue's offensive line dominated from start to finish and didn't allow a sack of Ryan Browne for the second straight game.
Barry Odom seemed to know a game like this from the running game could happen but I'm not sure he could have expected this. Fame Ijeboi ended the game with 195 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns on 30 attempts. That is a star running back totting the rock in a way that Purdue really hasn't seen since Mike Alstott was carrying the ball his senior year when he averaged 24 carries per game.Ijeboi's performance ended up being the 15th best performance in Purdue football history and the best since Markell Jones' 217 against Indiana in 2017.
Barry was asked if the way they won against Illinois helped vault them to a performance like we saw against Minnesota. Although the head coach somewhat discounted that notion, you could clearly Purdue playing with more confidence and a sense of belonging that they hadn't had before.
Despite transferring in from Minnesota, Ijeboi downplayed any sort of ill will towards his former team and emphasized that he saw the game as an opportunity to show his love and commitment to his new Purdue teammates. Purdue fans have fallen in love with Ijeboi because of his hard running style but what has made him so effective is how patient he is behind the line of scrimmage when there are pulling guards, tight ends, and receivers.
Jojo Hayden had some supportive comments for DC Kevin Kane following a question where he was asked about all the noise coming from fans and media. Hayden noted that the comments don't phase the players and the defense has stayed close knit throughout the season.
Browne was incredibly effective and efficient in the running game as Ijeboi opened up the read-option game. Browne said that it wasn't part of the game plan but Browne made great reads in pulling the ball back but also escaping pressure for some big runs.
Curt Neal and Ijeboi spoke about the domination of the trenches by Purdue's offensive and defensive line. Purdue's offensive line helped the Boilers go 6-6 inside the redzone with 5 touchdowns and 1 field goal. More than that, Purdue dominated in the power rush metric going 4-6 for a 67% conversion rate and averaging 8.2 rushing yards per 3rd down rushing attempt. In advanced college football analytics, Power Rushing refers to run plays on short-yardage situations—typically 3rd or 4th down with 2 or fewer yards to go, or 1st and Goal / 2nd and Goal from the 2-yard line or closer. The Power Rushing Success Rate measures the percentage of those specific short-yardage running plays that successfully resulted in either a first down or a touchdown.
The players continue to speak very highly of Head Coach Barry Odom and what he is building at Purdue. The success Purdue has experienced the last two weeks is something that hasn't occurred for the Boilers since 2022 when they last won back to back B1G Conference games. In fact, Purdue won three straight conference games to finish the season by beating Illinois, Northwestern, and Indiana along with three straight B1G victories earlier in that same season (Minnesota, Maryland, Nebraska).
