Indiana safety Preston Zachman addressed the media following practice, offering valuable insight into his transition to the program, the defensive standard , and the steady evolution of the team across the first two weeks of the season.
Zachman highlighted the pride the entire defensive unit takes in pitching standard setting performances. After a sloppy opener against North Texas , the safety noted a massive leap forward against Howard, pointing directly to cleaner execution and hyper intentional focus on the little things.
"I think it was just more of, like, our attention to detail, just being intentional with our tackling, communication, everything like that," Zachman said when reflecting on the week to week leap. "All the little details, we weren't very clean the first week, we were a little sloppy. I think we made good improvement, and we have to continue to do that."
Communication tested the secondary when starting cornerbacks rotated out of the lineup. Zachman emphasized that the defensive group embraces a next man up mindset, demanding every player step up seamlessly to ensure everyone stays on the exact same page during play by play action.
Drawing from his past background playing quarterback in high school, Zachman uses that offensive perspective as a competitive weapon on the field. He constantly tries to think like a play caller to play mind games with opposing signal callers, aiming to stay one step ahead of the offense before the ball is even snapped.
Getting back into the flow of live game action has presented his biggest personal milestone after missing the majority of last season to injury. Furthermore, learning coordinator Bryant Haines' defensive scheme came naturally thanks to Zachman's prior experience with multiple defensive systems across his collegiate career. He praised the versatility of the current defense, noting how tiny disguise tweaks create massive problems for opposing offenses.
Working alongside fellow veteran safety Amare Ferrell has accelerated that comfort level on the back end. Zachman noted that both upperclassmen operate as high level thinkers who make each other's jobs vastly easier through constant dialogue. He also praised Raekwon Jones for his positional versatility on defense and special teams, while pointing out how playmaker Rolijah Hardy always seems to find himself around the football.
Across his multi year collegiate career, Zachman has watched the college football landscape change dramatically through the transfer portal and NIL era. Yet, he believes this specific Indiana locker room features rare depth with no obvious weaknesses from top to bottom.
Looking ahead to upcoming weekly match ups, Zachman credited the internal iron sharpens iron dynamic of going against Indiana's high powered offense daily. He specifically pointed to quarterback Josh Hoover 's lightning fast processing speed and decision making as a key catalyst sharpening the defense every single practice session.
