The Grand Rapids Griffins' record-breaking regular season won't be punctuated by a Calder Cup.
The Chicago Wolves rode another strong goaltending performance from Cayden Primeau to a 3-2 win that gave the Carolina Hurricanes affiliate a four-game triumph over Grand Rapids in the best-of-five division championship series.
Primeau, the son of former Red Wings player Keith Primeau, made 33 saves. That included 16 in the third period when the Griffins were trying desperately to come from behind.
Down 3-0 in the closing minutes, the Griffins created goals by Eduards Tralmaks (17:13) and Sheldon Dries (19:45) to give themselves a chance. But their effort to tie in the closing seconds fell short and they were eliminated.
The Griffins were fourth and final division champion to be eliminated in the AHL postseason. The Red Wings were hoping for an extended playoff run out of the Griffins after their impressive 51-16-4-1 regular season. The Griffins established multiple league and team records along the way.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, a candidate to play for the Red Wings next season, assisted on the Dries goal. That gives him in eight points in eight playoff games. In his two playoffs with Grand Rapids, he shows 11 points in 11 games. He joins Jonatan Berggren , Ivan Ciernik, Valtteri Filppula , Darren Haydar, Jiri Hudler , Ville Leino , Kevin Miller, Kip Miller, Stacy Roest and Ben Street on the list of Griffins who have played at least 10 playoff games and averaged a point per game.
The Griffins had to play Game 4 without Amadeus Lombardi who was injured in the previous game on an illegal hit.
Michal Postava played his eighth consecutive game in net and made 18 saves.
