While searching for a new left back during the summer transfer window, PSG is set to sign Lucas Digne soon, although the club initially preferred a different profile to provide cover for Nuno Mendes.
Life is full of surprises, and so is the transfer market. Before Monday, few would have predicted Lucas Digne's return to PSG, 10 years after his move to Barcelona. The left back, who will be tasked with facing Lamine Yamal one-on-one on Tuesday night, is now set to return to Paris once the World Cup ends.

The experienced Aston Villa left back, who will soon turn 33, is set to sign a three-year contract with PSG, which will pay less than €10 million to complete the transfer. At the end of May, L'Equipereported that PSG had made significant progress toward signing a young left back to provide depth behind Nuno Mendes, a profile that did not match Digne.
In an article published Tuesday, L'Equipeconfirmed that Luis Campos had prioritized signing a younger left-back over the past few months, specifically a player aged 19 to 22. The fact that Nuno Mendes is only 24 appears to have changed Campos' thinking regarding the profile of his backup, unless Luis Enrique pushed for Digne, whom he coached at Barcelona.
The soon-to-be 33-year-old France international checks many of the boxes for the ideal backup to Nuno Mendes. He is French, knows the club, knows the coach, knows several players through the national team, and brings extensive top-level experience.
Most importantly, Lucas Digne fully understands the role awaiting him in Paris as Nuno Mendes' backup and has accepted it. According to L'Equipe, Digne wanted to "complete the circle" with PSG and, several months ago, privately said that he wanted to help establish Nuno Mendes as the best left-back in the world, without imagining it would become reality.

The Portugal international did not need Lucas Digne to achieve that, but he will now have a supportive "big brother" by his side in the coming months. Adding to the story, Digne's eldest son, Isaho, is a big PSG and Desire Doue fan. In a few weeks, he will be able to watch both his father and his idol wearing the same PSG shirt after the two line up on the same flank against Spain on Tuesday.
Many fans have expressed their concern about Digne's potential signing, but, of course, it is hard to argue against the duo (Luis Campos and Luis Enrique) who gave them two consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, the first in the club's history.
