Michael Irvin believes there is a calculated reason why George Pickens may not be upset about the Dallas Cowboys using the franchise tag.
The Cowboys' decision ensured Pickens remains in Dallas for at least one more season, but it also delayed long-term contract talks.
While some view the tag as restrictive, Irvin suggested it could actually benefit the wide receiver. The explanation revolves around timing.

Speaking on his YouTube channel , Michael Irvin said: "I don't know if George wants to get a deal done right now. If I'm him, I'm waiting on guys like Puka Nacua, who's working on a new deal too."
He added: "That's going to raise the level. When that franchise tag got placed, officially, it gave us a whole new round of stuff to stir."
Irvin's point centres on market leverage. If Puka Nacua secures a lucrative extension, it could elevate the benchmark for elite receivers across the league.
Under that scenario, Pickens would benefit from patience rather than urgency. The franchise tag locks in immediate earnings while preserving flexibility for a larger payday down the line.
Michael Irvin further stated: "Here comes the spoon of b_______. They are trying to stir it all up…
"That's what they do now, to try and get under Jerry's skin, so he can harden his heart and not get anything done. So, let the games begin."
Irvin suggested media narratives could complicate negotiations by applying pressure to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Public debate often shapes perception, even when contract strategy is more nuanced behind the scenes.
For Pickens, the tag provides security without sacrificing leverage. If the receiver market rises again, Dallas may eventually have to meet a higher number.
Until then, Irvin sees patience as power rather than punishment.
