Raiders release OL Alex Cappa, gaining cap savings

It's Friday which means housecleaning day in Las Vegas ! Hours after news that the Raiders would be releasing QB Geno Smith , they have officially released OL Alex Cappa .

The veteran guard was signed last offseason to a two-year, $11 million deal. The deal was criticized at the time being that Cappa was coming off a season in which he was one of the worst pass blockers in the league at his position. He quickly lost first team reps and only ended up starting eight games due to injury.

Cappa's release was expected as it would save the Raiders some $5 million against the cap. His release along with Geno Smith's figure to put the Raiders over $100 million in cap space come the start of the league year and the opening of free agency, which could be the most available cap money in the league.

There will be several interior offensive linemen options on the free agent market who could be worth the Raiders spending some of their available money on and who could come in and start right away.
