The Los Angeles Rams are turning over every possible stone as they try to fix their special teams issues . They signed special teamer Jon Rhattigan to their practice squad on Tuesday and interestingly enough, they brought in former long snapper Jake McQuaide for a visit on the same day.
McQuaide came out of retirement last year to play for the Rams , replacing Alex Ward as the team's long snapper. But then he returned to retirement and hasn't played since. That's what makes this visit so unexpected and fascinating.
The Rams already have Joe Cardona, who they gave $3.45 million guaranteed this offseason, the most of any long snapper in the NFL. And by all measures, Cardona has been rock solid for Los Angeles. So maybe Sean McVay just wanted to bring in McQuaide to pick his brain on some of the Rams' special teams issues.
After all, it was labeled as a "visit" not a "tryout" on the official transaction wire, so it doesn't appear the Rams worked him out.
McQuaide was a valuable piece of the Rams' special teams operation for 10 years from 2011 to 2020, and then again in 2025. He made two Pro Bowls in his career, once in 2016 and once in 2017.
