Matthew Stafford threw 54 passes Monday night, and the Rams still leaned hard on three tight ends. Los Angeles fell 37-34 to the Bills in overtime before a loud SoFi Stadium crowd, and the snap sheet showed Sean McVay sliding back into the heavy tight end looks he favored before injuries thinned the room.
With Colby Parkinson back in the lineup , Rams tight ends logged 149 snaps across 82 offensive plays, according to PFF. A week earlier in Philadelphia, it was 96 across 84. Expect that shape to carry into Sunday's home game against Arizona as long as all three stay healthy.
The third receiver role nearly vanished
Jordan Whittington started in the slot in Week 4 and played 42 snaps, or 50 percent. He played 11 on Monday (13 percent), and Konata Mumpfield dropped from 23 snaps to six. Tutu Atwell took the obvious passing downs, running 31 routes on 32 snaps per PFF, while Davante Adams' share slipped from 95 percent to 73 percent.
Parkinson played 53 snaps (65 percent) and posted an 84.3 run-blocking grade on 20 run-block snaps, according to PFF. Tyler Higbee handled most of the routes, running 39 on his 55 snaps. Terrance Ferguson is headed to injured reserve with an ankle injury, which leaves Davis Allen (41 snaps) as the third piece.
Puka Nacua played 70 snaps and caught 17 passes for 138 yards. Blake Corum rose from 13 snaps to 22 while Kyren Williams' share dipped to 73 percent from 83 percent.
Josaiah Stewart takes over the open edge
With Myles Garrett still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery , Stewart played 52 of 63 defensive snaps (83 percent), up from 32 of 61 (52 percent) against the Eagles. Wesley Bailey fell from 48 percent to 25 percent. Stewart turned 20 pass-rush snaps into two pressures and the team's only sack, according to PFF, and McVay's latest timeline points to Week 7 or Week 8 for Garrett.
Jaylen Watson's return reshaped the secondary. Watson played every snap at right corner after dealing with a shoulder injury , Emmanuel Forbes didn't log a defensive snap after playing 21 in Week 4, and Josh Wallace went from 100 percent to 54 percent as the nickel. Aaron Donald's 42 snaps also cut Braden Fiske from 44 to 25.
Nate Landman posted a 92.1 overall grade with eight stops and two forced fumbles, per PFF. The defense missed 14 tackles, though, and James Cook ran for 111 yards on 25 carries.
