- How Rangers are affected by Brady Tkachuk trade to Panthers
We don't know for sure if the New York Rangers were among the four teams Brady Tkachuk was willing to be traded to. But we do know his first preference was to be reunited with big brother Matthew, which is exactly what happened when the Ottawa Senators shipped their captain to the Florida Panthers in a Father's Day blockbuster Sunday.
No matter how much Rangers general manager Chris Drury longed for the bruising 26-year-old, who has three 30-goal seasons and an Olympic gold medal on his resume, there was likely no chance Tkachuk gave much of a serious thought about coming to New York this summer.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen reported that Tkachuk told the Senators after the IIHF World Championships that he wouldn't re-sign with them before he could become an unrestricted free agent in 2028. Armed with a full no-move clause — sound familiar Rangers fans? — Tkachuk provided Ottawa a short list of four teams he'd accept a trade to. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun said that the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes were on that list, as were the Cup runners-up Vegas Golden Knights , and Panthers . It's reported that the Minnesota Wild were the fourth team.
But in reality, and not unlike with Artemi Panarin and the Los Angeles Kings , Tkachuk was locked in on one team. The Panthers.
"In the end, the only place he was going to go was Florida," Garrioch said Sunday night on TSN. "So, [Ottawa GM Steve Staios] had to find a way to make this happen with the Panthers."
The Panthers paid a hefty price to reunite the Tkachuks. They sent three first-round draft picks, including Nos. 9 and 25 overall this year, and a second-rounder to the Senators. But this trade certainly helps set the Panthers up to make another run at winning the Stanley Cup next season, after winning it all in 2024 and 2025, and then missing the playoffs altogether in an injury-marred 2025-26 campaign.

But how does this trade directly, or even indirectly, affect the Rangers? Let's take a look
Rangers must ignore bad perception, stay the course this summer
Unfairly or not, Drury and the Rangers are being crushed from several corners on social media for not landing Tkachuk. In one corner is the crowd furious that Drury didn't acquire someone who fits the mold of young, skilled, rugged player in his prime the Rangers so desperately need — whether Tkachuk had included them on his list of four teams or not.
Especially galling to some is that the Rangers, rightly or wrongly, were linked to Tkachuk for several years, and then didn't land him once he actually was traded.

In another corner are those angry that the Rangers are no longer seen as a destination. If not on Tkachuk's list of four teams, then that's just another example. Supposedly gone are the days that the likes of Adam Fox , Jacob Trouba , and Panarin pushed, one way or another, to only play on Broadway.
All of this must be white noise for Drury and Co., though. This a critical stretch for the Rangers in their retool, a hugely important offseason. And whether they get it right or wrong or somewhere in the middle, decisions can't be influenced by outside opinion or perception.
What about Vincent Trocheck ?

Perhaps their biggest decision involves whether or not to trade Vincent Trochec k. The expectation remains that the Rangers will trade the 32-year-old this summer. Maybe even more so now that Trocheck hired powerful agent Pat Brisson , likely to help facilitate a soft landing spot for the veteran center.

There's a small chance that the Panthers could've been in on Trocheck, who played his first six-plus NHL seasons with them. However, Florida likely doesn't have the prospects New York seeks in return for Trocheck. And now it's a moot point since the Panthers have Tkachuk.
However, residual fallout from that trade could be that it took Florida out of the mix for center Dylan Larkin , who requested a trade from the Detroit Red Wings . That narrows the field some for teams seeking either Larkin or Trocheck, especially since neither center appears likely to waive a no-trade clause to accept a deal to go to Ottawa.
Panthers are an even bigger obstacle for Rangers
Even before acquiring Brady Tkachuk, the Panthers appeared primed to be a hungry, motivated, and legit Cup contender again next season. This exhausted team has a full four-month offseason to completely recover from all their injuries this past season, and three straight runs deep into June from 2023-25.

Sasha Barkov missed all of the 2025-26 season after shredding his knee. But Florida's captain looked to be as good as new during the World Championship. Matthew Tkachuk is fully healthy again too. As are others.
Brady's addition gives the Panthers a top-3 center group of Barkov, Brady Tkahcuk, and Anton Lundell . Wow. Plus, can you even imagine how fired up the bruise brothers will be as teammates? Take the three-week Olympics and the brief Four Nations Face-Off and expand that over a nine-month NHL seasons and playoffs.

So, yes, the Panthers should contend again for first place in the Atlantic Division, maybe even in the Eastern Conference. But they probably would have anyway. So, none of this really affects the Rangers, except that it's a team which missed the playoffs in 2025-26 that should snag one of the eight postseason berths next season, making it harder for the Rangers to do so.

But the Rangers aren't a Stanley Cup contender right now, so the fact that the Panthers are more of one next season has no bearing on the Blueshirts.
Rangers could capitalize if Senators take step back next season
The flip side to the above is that the Rangers could benefit if the Senators take a step back in 2026-27. Ottawa made the playoffs ahead of the Rangers two years running and remain a solid young team. But unless they make some serious additions this offseason, their lineup is seriously depleted without Tkachuk, and the Rangers might be able to slip past them in the standings.
Of course, Ottawa did a good job navigating Tkachuk missing 22 games due to injury this past season. They still won 44 games and finished with 99 points to secure the second wild card in the Eastern Conference . But a whole season without him is something else altogether.

The sobering news for the Rangers is that the Senators already are looking into filling that lineup void. including reportedly making a run at the top RFA on the market, Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson . So, perhaps, the Senators will remain the better young team next season; but the playing field is more level right now.
