The New York Rangers just endured a dreadful season, missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again. Now, as the Rangers’ offseason priorities begin, J.T. Miller declared his number one priority, according to the Rangers’ Videos on X.
Miller emphasized that the Olympics were a great experience, but his focus was on restoring order at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers struggled mightily, finishing with 77 points, the fewest in the Eastern Conference. It was the second consecutive season they missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It was also a down season for Miller, who finished with 17 goals and 53 total points over 53 games with the Rangers. Notably, that was well below the 70 he had in 72 games for the Rangers and Vancouver Canucks in the previous season. Miller captained the Rangers despite dealing with injuries, and just could not recapture the magic he had a few seasons ago when he had 103 points.
Instead of competing for the Stanley Cup, the Rangers will now focus on the NHL Draft and finding ways to rebuild a team that has fallen tremendously over the years. Miller will likely return for his second full season with the Rags and be one of the veterans remaining as the team attempts to get back to contention.
There’s no telling what the Rangers might do. It will be an offseason filled with many questions. Ultimately, could trade some of their vets to make the team younger. After trading Jacob Trouba last season, losing Chris Kreider in the offseason, and trading Artemi Panarin this season, the youth movement is beginning. What that means for Miller could be anyone’s guess as he attempts to help this team get back to respectability.
