Rangers sign 37 year old free agent to a one year contract
The New York Rangers have been off to a strong start in the 2026-27 season, sitting at 7-3-1 and holding down second place in the Metropolitan Division with 15 points through 11 games. But as any hockey fan knows, depth is what separates contenders from pretenders, and GM Chris Drury has been keeping a close eye on ways to shore up the bottom of his lineup. With injuries creating holes in the forward group, the Rangers went out and found a solution that brings over 900 games of NHL experience to the table.
A Familiar Face Gets a New Home
The Rangers officially announced that they have signed veteran forward Luke Glendening to a one-year deal worth the league minimum of $850,000. The 37-year-old center initially joined the organization on a professional tryout earlier in October, his second PTO of the fall after a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Lightning that didn't result in a contract. This time around, Glendening clearly showed enough to earn himself a roster spot.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan native is no stranger to grinding out a career the hard way. Originally signed by the Detroit Red Wings as an undrafted free agent back in 2013, Glendening has carved out a 13-season NHL career across five different organizations, suiting up for the Red Wings, Stars, Lightning, Devils, and Flyers. He's appeared in 934 regular season games, tallying 85 goals and 90 assists for 175 career points, along with 11 points in 60 playoff games. Last season, he split time between New Jersey and Philadelphia, putting up nine points in 70 games while continuing to be one of the league's most reliable faceoff men. Since 2020-21, his 57.5% faceoff win percentage ranks ninth among all NHL skaters who have taken at least 1,000 draws.
Glendening also showed he still has something left in the tank during the 2026 playoffs, averaging nearly 14 minutes of ice time per game and chipping in a goal across 10 postseason contests as the Flyers knocked off the Penguins in the first round. He's been a Selke Trophy ballot consideration earlier in his career and remains a dependable penalty killer, which is exactly what the Rangers need right now.
Filling a Critical Gap in the Lineup
The signing makes a lot of sense when you look at the Rangers' current situation. Joe Veleno, who New York brought in this summer on a one-year, $1.2 million deal to fill the bottom-six center role, landed on long-term injured reserve. That left a gap that Justin Dowling has been trying to fill, but consistency has been an issue in the depths of the forward group. The Rangers also recently recalled Taylor Raddysh from the AHL to help on the wing, another player known for his penalty killing and defensive awareness.

Glendening slots in perfectly as a defensive fourth-line center who can win draws, kill penalties, and bring a veteran steadiness to the lineup. He's not going to light up the scoresheet, but that's not what the Rangers need from him. New York already boasts the second-best penalty kill in the NHL, stopping 93.5% of opposing power plays this season, and adding a proven PK specialist like Glendening should only strengthen that unit further.
With roughly $4.4 million in cap space available even amid their current injury situation, the financial side of this deal was never going to be an issue. At $850,000, it's a low-risk move that could pay real dividends if Glendening can replicate even a fraction of what he brought to Philadelphia last year. For a player who went undrafted and has built his entire career on hard work, reliability, and doing the little things right, getting another shot at age 37 is a testament to the kind of player he is. The Rangers clearly believe he still has something to offer, and given their early-season success, this looks like a smart depth addition for a team with legitimate postseason aspirations.
