- Ravens defensive players with most to gain once pads come on
The Baltimore Ravens can learn only so much from helmets, shorts, and controlled offseason practices.
Training camp changes once the pads come on. That is when defensive linemen can prove they can anchor and shed blocks, edge rushers can show whether their power translates, linebackers can fit the run through traffic, and defensive backs can tackle. For a Ravens defense adjusting under Jesse Minter and Anthony Weaver, padded practices will help determine which players are ready for larger roles and which ones still need time.

Here are six Ravens defensive players with the most to gain once padded practices begin.
Zion Young
Young is one of the most obvious Ravens defenders who can benefit from padded practices.
The rookie edge rusher has the size, speed, and motor to make noise in camp, but pass rushers are difficult to fully evaluate before the pads come on. Once contact begins, Young can show whether his burst and power can hold up against NFL tackles. Baltimore does not need him to look like a finished product right away, but it needs to see traits that can translate into a developmental pass-rush role.
Young's path is tied to disruption. Trey Hendrickson gives the Ravens an established veteran presence, while Mike Green and Tavius Robinson are part of a competitive edge rotation. Young can help himself by setting a physical edge, converting speed to power, and finishing reps instead of simply flashing athletic ability.

If he can win in one-on-one drills and carry that momentum into preseason games, Young could move from intriguing rookie to legitimate rotational candidate.
Aeneas Peebles
Peebles is built for the part of camp where defensive linemen can finally show real contact strength.
Interior defensive linemen can flash quickness in non-padded work, but padded practices reveal whether they can handle double teams, play with leverage, shed blocks, and finish against the run. Peebles has a chance to help himself because Baltimore's defensive line has veterans and established contributors, but the depth chart still needs young players who can earn trust.

The Ravens already have Nnamdi Madubuike , Travis Jones , Broderick Washington, John Jenkins , and Calais Campbell in the defensive line mix. That makes Peebles' roster path difficult, but not impossible. His best chance is to show a penetrating skill set that gives Weaver another interior option on passing downs.
If Peebles can create backfield disruption, play with enough anchor, and prove he belongs against NFL-caliber blockers, he can become one of Baltimore's more interesting developmental defensive linemen.
John Jenkins
Jenkins is not a young sleeper, but padded practices still matter for a veteran who just signed his first contract extension.

The veteran defensive tackle's value is tied to size, strength, and the ability to control space. Those traits are difficult to highlight in spring practices, but they become much clearer once the Ravens start working in pads. Jenkins does not need to win a popularity contest in camp. He needs to prove he can still eat blocks, handle early-down work, and give Baltimore dependable depth against the run.
That role matters because the Ravens play in the AFC North, where physicality is not optional. Jenkins can help himself by showing that he remains a reliable interior presence who can keep linebackers clean and hold up in short-yardage situations.
Baltimore has younger defensive linemen pushing for roles, but Jenkins' experience and body type give him a specific value. If he looks fresh and sturdy once contact begins, he can strengthen his case for a roster spot.
Trenton Simpson
Simpson may have as much to gain as any linebacker on the roster.

He played 407 defensive snaps and 236 special teams snaps last season, and he enters a pivotal year with a chance to become the clear second inside linebacker next to Roquan Smith . Teddye Buchanan played 651 defensive snaps before suffering a torn ACL in Week 15, and his recovery will shape the second-level competition. That creates an opening for Simpson to make a strong impression.
Padded practices are important because Simpson's evaluation is about more than athleticism. The Ravens need to see him fit the run, take on blocks, communicate, and finish tackles in traffic. He has the speed to run sideline to sideline, but the next step is becoming a reliable down-to-down linebacker.
If Simpson looks decisive and physical once the pads come on, he can change the conversation about Baltimore's linebacker room. He has the talent to become more than a rotational defender. Camp gives him the chance to prove he is ready for that jump.
T.J. Tampa
Tampa is one of the defensive backs who can gain the most from padded practices because his game needs to be evaluated with physicality.

The Ravens have star power and versatility in the secondary, but the cornerback depth chart still has roles to sort out behind the top names. Tampa has the size and coverage tools to push for snaps, but padded practices will test his tackling, run support, press technique, and ability to compete through contact.
That matters in Minter's defense. Baltimore needs defensive backs who can cover, tackle, and communicate in a scheme that can present multiple looks. Tampa can help himself by being reliable on the outside, finishing plays in space, and showing he can handle special teams responsibilities.
If Tampa consistently wins competitive periods and tackles well in preseason action, he can move closer to a meaningful defensive role.
Keondre Jackson
Jackson is the kind of roster-fringe defensive back who needs padded practices and preseason games to make his case.

In non-contact settings, young defensive backs can show movement skills and coverage awareness. Once the pads come on, the evaluation expands. Jackson has to show he can tackle, play with urgency, contribute on special teams, and avoid assignment mistakes. For players fighting near the bottom of the roster, those details often decide who stays in the building.
The Ravens' secondary is crowded, which means Jackson's path will not be easy. He has to make himself valuable in more than one phase. If he can handle safety or nickel responsibilities while covering kicks, he can give Baltimore a reason to keep developing him.
Jackson does not need to become a starter in camp. He needs to prove he is reliable, physical, and worth protecting on the practice squad or deeper roster.
Bottom line
Padded practices will matter for every Ravens defender, but they are especially important for players trying to define or expand roles.

Young can prove his pass-rush traits are ready to translate. Peebles can show he belongs in the defensive line rotation. Jenkins can reinforce his value as a veteran run defender. Simpson can push to become the clear second linebacker next to Smith. Tampa can strengthen its case for cornerback snaps. Jackson can use physicality and special teams work to stay in the roster conversation.
Baltimore already has high-end defensive talent. Once the pads come on, the Ravens will find out which depth pieces are ready to help.
