RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer did not try to sugarcoat the scale of his team's defeat against Bayern Munich. From Leipzig's perspective, the performance was not simply a case of losing to a better opponent. It was a reminder of just how much work remains before they can compete consistently at the highest level.
"We were inferior in every area today and had no chance. That's not our aspiration. Obviously you can lose in Munich against Bayern, but we had such a bad day and Bayern had a good one. I think six goals even flattered us. That was a lesson for us. We saw what it means to play at the top or world-class level. There's a lot of work ahead of us," said Schäfer (as captured by FCBayern.com ).
The admission that six goals flattered Leipzig is particularly damning. Bayern Munich were so dominant that the final score could have been even more embarrassing for the visitors, who struggled to cope with the intensity, quality, and attacking movement of Vincent Kompany's side.
For Bayern supporters, this was the kind of performance that reinforces the belief that Kompany's team can overwhelm elite opposition when everything clicks.
For Leipzig, Schäfer's challenge is clear— turn this painful lesson into meaningful progress rather than allowing it to define their season.
