Travis Hunter has delivered a heartfelt message of support for Deion Sanders amid growing questions about the Colorado Buffaloes head coach's future following a difficult season.
The former Colorado star reflected on his recruitment and explained how Sanders changed his outlook on football during an appearance on Ja'Marr Chase's podcast, Chasing No. 1 .
Colorado have endured a challenging campaign, sitting at 2-5 overall after losing five consecutive games and going 0-4 in Big 12 conference play.
Travis Hunter explains how Deion Sanders changed his life
Hunter revealed that he had initially planned to join Florida State before Sanders intervened and convinced him to choose Colorado.
"I was 100% going to Florida State," Hunter said .
Sanders then spoke with Hunter and his family about his vision for the young star, particularly his ambition to play on both sides of the ball. Having played both offence and defence himself, the Pro Football Hall of Famer promised Hunter an opportunity, provided he earned it.
"You want to play both sides of the ball? I'm definitely the coach that's going to—you know, I've done it before—but you're going to have to earn it," Sanders said, according to Hunter.
The Jacksonville Jaguars star made it clear that his respect for Sanders goes far beyond what happened on the football field.
"I got too much respect for him," Hunter added. "He came and got me to not go to Florida State and changed my mindset, changed the picture of everything. He really changed my life for real."
Hunter's comments come at a difficult time for Sanders, whose Colorado tenure has come under increasing scrutiny following the team's recent struggles.
The Buffaloes finished 3-9 last season and appear to be facing another disappointing campaign. If their current form continues, they could miss out on bowl eligibility for the third time in Sanders' four seasons as head coach.
ESPN's Matt Barrie has even described Sanders' Colorado tenure as "as good as done", although there has been no indication that university officials are ready to part ways with him.
For now, Hunter's comments offer a reminder of the impact Sanders had on one of college football's biggest stars. Whether the Buffaloes can turn their season around will be crucial as questions about the coach's future continue.
