Should Red Sox Consider Adding Recently DFA'ed All-Star? originally appeared on NESN . Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
In an unsurprising move, the San Diego Padres designated Nick Castellanos for assignment on Wednesday.
Castellanos, 34, has been terrible for the Padres this year, slashing just .191/.221/.339 with four home runs, 20 RBI and -0.9 WAR in 39 games.
With the Boston Red Sox aggressively looking for a right-handed bat , should they consider acquiring the two-time All-Star?
No, they shouldn't.
While Castellanos is a righty and still has a bit of pop in his bat, he's not a good fit for the Red Sox for several reasons.
For starters, he's an outfielder/first baseman/DH type, and Boston already has enough of those. Castellanos would only make the team's outfield logjam worse.
Furthermore, his aggressive hitting approach isn't what the Red Sox's lineup needs. They need more guys who can grind out at-bats and work walks, not someone with a 34:5 K/BB ratio this season.
Castellanos was bad last year, too, finishing the year with -0.8 WAR. His OPS has declined every year since 2023, so he appears to be over the hill.
On top of all that, Castellanos is not a good leader or clubhouse presence, so he doesn't even bring any intangibles to the table.
Accordingly, Craig Breslow should steer clear of Castellanos and aim considerably higher.
