Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff pelted Contreras with a 92.9 mph sinker in the third inning. Replay review upheld the call, marking the game's only hit-by-pitch.
The moment carried added significance given the history between the veteran slugger and the Brewers' pitching staff. After the game, Contreras revealed he has now been hit 24 times by Brewers pitchers during his career, a pattern that has clearly fueled frustration.
Earlier in the game, Contreras added to the tension with an aggressive slide into second base that tore the uniform of Milwaukee infielder David Hamilton . The play raised the intensity of an already competitive matchup before the hit-by-pitch occurred.
The Boston Globe's Tim Healey shared the 33-year-old catchers' postgame comments on X, formerly Twitter, capturing his frustration following the game.

"They always say, 'I'm not trying to hit you.' That gets old. So next time they hit me again, I'm going to take one of them out. That's a message."
Contreras backed up his emotions with a standout performance, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, a walk, and the hit-by-pitch, reaching base five times.
Despite his efforts, Boston fell 8–6 as Milwaukee improved to 8–2 on the season. The Red Sox dropped to 2–8, increasing early pressure to turn around what has been a turbulent start to the 2026 season.
The incident places additional focus on the ongoing dynamic between Woodruff and Contreras, with umpires and league officials likely to monitor the remainder of the series closely.

The exchange adds another layer of tension between the clubs, reinforcing a growing rivalry that has intensified through repeated on-field confrontations.
As Boston looks to rebound, emotions remain high, with the teams set to continue the series in Game 2 on Tuesday.
