With spring training a little over a month away, teams are reportedly getting more aggressive in their pursuit of Alex Bregman .
The Red Sox All-star has been linked to Boston , Toronto , Arizona , Detroit , and the Cubs this winter, but according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, two of those teams are upping the ante.
“Sources believe the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt for Bregman, though a Red Sox reunion remains a possibility,” Feinsand said.
The MLB insider believes Boston’s interest in Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette could affect their aggressiveness with Bregman.
“Last month, Bichette’s camp let clubs know that he would be willing to move to second base, news that potentially opened his market to more suitors,“ Feinsand said. ”The Red Sox, who have Trevor Story at shortstop, are believed to be interested in Bichette, though it may come down to whether Boston prefers him to Bregman... Bichette’s future may be tied directly to what happens with Bregman, as the Blue Jays and Red Sox are in on both players.”
After an injury-plagued 2024, Bichette bounced back last season, hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. Bichette is younger (27) than Bregman (31), but would cost the Red Sox a compensatory pick because he rejected a qualifying offer.
The Athletic’s Tim Britton projected Bregman to get six years and $171 million at the outset of free agency, while he believed Bichette would get an eight-year, $212 million deal.
Though they’ve been active on the trade market, the Red Sox have yet to sign a major league free agent this offseason.
