The Boston Red Sox are off to a 1-4 start to the season, and an infielder in the minor leagues just had a monster game.
Caleb Durbin , Andruw Monasterio and Marcelo Mayer are all off to subpar starts at the plate. Even though Mayer has had some moments, overall, he is hitting .214 through five games. The infielders and offense as a whole have to produce more. The offense has scored five runs in the last three games combined.
Pitching has not been great either, so it's not just the offense. However, the team needs a spark, and if something does not change soon, Nick Sogard is making a case to get an opportunity. On Tuesday night, in Triple-A, he went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and a walk. He had five RBIs on the night.
He hit a grand slam and now has a 1.738 OPS in Triple-A this year. Worcester won 19-3 on Tuesday, and Sogard is a big reason why. Sogard did not have a good spring training, but his monster game on Tuesday could be the start of something. He played in 30 games for the Red Sox last season and was not terrible.
He hit .260 and collected nine RBIs. The Red Sox had high hopes for Monasterio as a utility player off the bench. However, if he does not start hitting better when he's given the chance, trying Sogard out in his spot would not be a terrible decision.
Between the minors and the big leagues, Sogard has played every position except catcher. He could be a solid replacement for Monasterio if the Red Sox think they need to try out a new bat on the bench.
