The Boston Red Sox will have to wait through the offseason to see when Mickey Gasper can return after the catcher and first baseman underwent surgery Friday.
Boston announced that Gasper had a successful repair of his right distal biceps tendon. Dr. Matthew Leibman performed the procedure at Mass General Brigham in Boston.
Gasper's injury occurred during Boston's Sept. 25 game against the Chicago Cubs. He started behind the plate before leaving in the sixth inning with discomfort in his right biceps.
The injury ended his regular season and kept him off Boston's roster for its American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees.
Gasper, 30, enjoyed his most productive major league season to date in 2026. He appeared in 67 games and hit .251 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs in 225 plate appearances.
He also posted a .357 on-base percentage and .466 slugging percentage.
Gasper is expected to need approximately four to six months to recover from the procedure, per a tweet from Tim Healey . That timeline could make his availability for the start of Boston's 2027 season uncertain.
