The Boston Red Sox have a loaded outfield, and it creates a problem for Kristain Campbell.
Campbell was the Red Sox's No. 2 prospect last season and started the 2025 season in the big leagues. He signed an eight-year, $60 million extension with the Red Sox, but then started struggling. He was so bad he got sent to down to Triple-A and has not been back in the big leagues since.
The Red Sox have made him a full-time outfielder now, but the Red Sox already have Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu in the big leagues. They also have Jarren Duran. Campbell does not have a clear path back to The Show, and even though he played well in Triple-A this year, MassLive's Chris Cotillo predicted he would get designated for assignment.
"It sounds way more drastic and meaningful than it is, but the Red Sox need 40-man roster spots and at a certain point, might have to take Campbell of the roster," wrote Cotillo. "It's unlikely a team claims him and his remaining $55 million in guaranteed money... and there's a chance the Sox would be fine if they did, anyway."
Campbell was the WooSox Player of the Month in July, slashing .379/.507/.552 with two home runs and 13 walks. He had an .840 OPS in August and a 1.147 OPS in September.
He looked much better late in the season, and the Red Sox could find space for him if they traded Duran.
