Another Boston Red Sox veteran is headed to the injured list, but with it comes the exciting return of a fan favorite.
Ahead of Friday night's series opener against the Kansas City Royals , the club announced that outfielder Eli White was placed on the injured list retroactive to September 9th with a right foot ligament injury. Coming up in his place is infielder Anthony Seigler , who endeared himself to Red Sox nation this summer by playing an important role in the club's improbable turnaround.
Seigler made his debut on June 4 but was quickly sent back down after just two appearances before returning on June 20th. From then until early August, he was almost an everyday fixture in the lineup as the second baseman and often the leadoff man while Boston began the 32-5 stretch that got the season back on track.
The timing of his arrival paired with his fiery style of play and knack for big moments made him a figurehead of the run, but the returns of Nick Sogard , Trevor Story , and Isiah Kiner-Falefa made Seigler's role redundant and he was optioned on August 30 to clear room for Story and Roman Anthony to come off of the IL.
Now, Boston is battered again as they prepare for October. Willson Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela were given stints on the IL to get soft tissue problems resolved, and now the fill-in center fielder White has gone down.
The 32-year-old White suffered the ugly foot injury on Tuesday night when he went crashing awkwardly into the center field wall at Fenway. He was held out of the lineup the next day after coming back sore on Wednesday and was sent for imaging, with Nate Eaton taking over in center. It is Jarren Duran who will slide over from left field to assume these duties on Friday night, with Anthony playing left.
It's not clear how long of an absence White is looking at with his foot injury, but it would be a tough blow to lose his speed and defensive versatility in a postseason bench role. With Contreras and Rafaela nearing their returns, Seigler's third stint with the major league club may be short lived, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him produce a big moment immediately upon arriving at Fenway Park this weekend.
