As a former player, Alex Cora will be loyal to his veterans when he is managing. Trevor Story has been one of those players for the Boston Red Sox , not fully living up to his expectations but being a solid player when healthy. It took Story some time to get going for the Red Sox in 2025, but he did finish the year strong with 25 home runs and 96 RBIs. It was worthy of Cora giving him another look in the two-hole.
The problem with Cora's former player mindset and having to answer to bosses who might be more analytically inclined is that they won't always agree. Boston's executives looked at Story and saw underlying metrics that might push him farther down the lineup, but Cora stuck with him at the top of the order earlier this season. That decision led the front office to start questioning Cora, according to Julian McWilliams of CBS Sports.
Boston's rough start to the season didn't help matters. Story started slow again in 2026, which led Cora to move him down in the lineup, but by then it was too late. He had already gone against the front office's wishes, and it was part of the reason why the team was in the mess that they were in.
Some members were on Cora's side, as one of McWilliam's sources said that he believed Story is still an everyday player. Still, the disconnect between how Cora viewed the lineup and how the front office did was too large to justify keeping Cora with the team. The hope is likely that Chad Tracy will stay more in line.
