Red Sox's trade deadline decision should be obvious. But what will they do? appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The Boston Red Sox have yet to decide if they will buy or sell before the MLB trade deadline. While many people around the MLB world have opinions on what the Red Sox should do , Boston is likely going to wait and see how the team performs over the next couple of weeks. A recent sweep of the New York Yankees led some to wonder if the Red Sox will buy , but selling remains the best decision in all reality.
Boston is currently 37-48 overall. They are in last place in the American League East standings, where they trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 14 games for first place. Boston is also six games back of an AL Wild Card spot.
If they were to buy, the goal would obviously be to add enough talent to make a run at a Wild Card position. Their chances of winning the division are extremely slim.
However, the Red Sox have more talent than many bad teams. Sure, the New York Mets are in that conversation as well, but they play in a much deeper National League so they will likely sell. Boston could re-tool their roster by trading veterans such as Aroldis Chapman and Sonny Gray . Willson Contreras is probably less likely to be traded, but the Sox could receive a massive return for moving him.
Selling at the deadline would not mean Boston is entering a complete rebuild. The ball club still features plenty of pitching depth. They could simply add more overall balance to the roster in hopes of seriously competing in 2027.
What will the Red Sox do? Only time will tell, but selling — without entering a complete rebuild — makes the most sense.
