It's not easy being a Major League Baseball player who has to take a back seat when a star returns.
Unfortunately for Boston Red Sox infielder Andruw Monasterio , that's something he's going to have to deal with. Monasterio has done all the right things for the Red Sox this year, really stepping up in a major way during the injuries to guys like Trevor Story .
The most promising thing about this Red Sox team is that they're not only winning games at a high level, but they also seem to understand their roles. These aren't guys who believe they should be doing more than they are; instead, they're trying to do what's best for the team.
That's the case at the moment for Monasterio, who had a lot of good things to say about him just playing his role when things return to normal.
"I know what my role is," Monasterio said , per the Globe. "At the beginning of the season, I played DH, first base, second base — I don't have any issues with that. I know what my role is.
"And in spring training, [Story] was the shortstop of the team, so I don't want to be mad or I don't want to be upset if they make that decision. They are the front office, they are the coaches, they make the decision. They pay me to play, I play whatever they want."
It isn't often a guy who has stepped up like this would make comments in a similar manner to the media.
Monasterio has hit .261 with a 109 OPS+, posting a 1.4 bWAR in 87 games. For the small role he's played, he's done exactly what he's been asked to do, so it's cool to see him take a backseat and understand who Story is as a player.
