The Detroit Red Wings claimed tough Swedish journeyman defenseman Andreas Englund from the Calgary Flames on waivers in a move that may have implications on interim GM Shawn Horcoff 's final roster decisions.
Last season, Englund, 30, played 24 games with the Nashville Predators and 52 games for their American League affiliate in Milwaukee. With Simon Edvinsson still unsigned and Jacob Bernard-Docker injured, Englund may be insurance against that uncertainty.
Englund has a one-year, two-way contract and the Red Wings can put him back on waivers with the hope of parking him Grand Rapids in case they need him this season.
Or, they can plug him into the lineup in an effort to reinforce the idea that the Red Wings hope to have more pushback and physicality this season.
Englund Plays With Edge
Englund is 6-foot-4 and has played a total of 200 NHL games with the Predators, Los Angeles Kings , Chicago Blackhawks , Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators . He has 24 fighting majors in his NHL career, with a high of 11 in 2023-24.
He is minus-26 in his NHL career with two career goals. The Senators originally drafted Englund in the second round (40th overall) in 2014.
Andreas Englund, claimed by the Detroit Red Wings, is a hard-hitting stay-at-home defenseman who hasn't played a full NHL season since 2024. Despite making a change at GM, Detroit continues to love this type of defenseman (Chiarot, Hamonic, and now Englund) https://t.co/hylXLvjCPt pic.twitter.com/OhWUHv67wN

Right now, Moritz Seider , Edvinsson (when he re-signs), Justin Faulk , Albert Johansson and Ben Chiarot will own five of the blue line jobs. Anton Johansson is the favorite to land the sixth spot. Axel Sandin-Pellikka is also in the running for a lineup spot. William Wallinder is also in the mix. If the Red Wings try to send Wallinder to Grand Rapids, he must go through waivers.
The Red Wings also haven't said whether they will keep seven or eight defensemen. If Edvinsson isn't signed by opening day and Bernard-Docker is still injured, the Red Wings could open the season with Englund, Wallinder, Anton Johansson and Sandin-Pellikka on the active roster.
If Edvinsson is signed and Bernard Docker is declared healthy, the Red Wings may have to send two of those four to Grand Rapids.
