Detroit Red Wings star Dylan Larkin 's trade request has come to a head with him telling the team he won't play and interim general manager Shawn Horcoff suspending him.
"We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates," Horcoff said in a statement on Thursday, Oct. 28. "We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay."
The center, who's in the fourth year of an eight-year contract, had requested a trade following the end of last season after the Red Wings' playoff drought hit 10 seasons. He has bumped up his list of approved teams from three to 10.
"All I can say is that Dylan's had enough of the situation," Larkin's agent, Pat Brisson, told the Detroit Free Press , part of the USA TODAY Network, on Thursday about Larkin's decision not to play.
Horcoff said he would continue to pursue trade talks but it has to satisfy the Red Wings' best interests and long-term goals.
Larkin had agreed to report to training camp but was stripped of his captaincy . He missed the start of camp with an injury and was booed by fans during introductions at the home opener. But he had played since returning from the injury and had six points in 10 games.
Coach Todd McLellan had told reporters earlier on Thursday that Larkin wouldn't play on Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks and Horcoff would explain why. Horcoff put out a statement through the team at 5:40 p.m. ET (see below), less than two hours before the Red Wings' home game begins.
Larkin, 30, a Michigan native, was drafted by the Red Wings 15th overall in 2014. He was named captain in 2021.

Are Dylan Larkin trade talks escalating?
Horcoff didn't want to get into details but he said his phone "rang a lot today."
How long can this standoff last?
Horcoff said he couldn't put a timeline on it and it's difficult to pull off a trade with the teams on Larkin's list because of salary cap concerns.
"I'm prepared to wait as long as it's necessary to make sure that the return that we get is something that's good for the Red Wings overall."
What is Shawn Horcoff looking for in a trade?
"The goal is to get players who can help us right away," he said. "But at the same time, the ultimate goal is the long-term success of the organization. I'm open to all different kind of deals and in the end, we're trying to find something that's fair for a player of Dylan's caliber. He's a heck of a player on a good contract."
