The Detroit Red Wings find themselves in a familiar offseason position: trying to lock up a cornerstone piece of their rebuilding puzzle while rival teams circle with interest. This time, the player at the center of the intrigue is 23-year-old Swedish defenseman Simon Edvinsson, whose restricted free agent status has sparked speculation about a potential offer sheet from at least one contending team.
According to well-connected hockey insider Elliott Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes are actively considering using an offer sheet to pry Edvinsson away from Detroit. Friedman, speaking on his podcast, identified the defending Stanley Cup champions as a team looking to make a splash by adding a defenseman, and he believes Edvinsson would be an exceptional fit for Carolina's system. But the Red Wings have made it clear to the rest of the league: they are prepared to match whatever comes their way.
The Red Wings currently hold roughly $18 million in cap space, giving them significant financial room to counter any rival bid. Reports suggest the team has been advised to set aside at least $12 million specifically to protect against an Edvinsson offer sheet. Pre-summer projections pegged the blueliner's next contract at around $8.7 million in average annual value on a long-term deal, but recent developments could push that figure closer to $10 million.
Carolina presently has about $10 million in available cap room, though that number could grow if the Hurricanes move forward with a reported plan to trade Alexander Nikishin while attaching Jesperi Kotkaniemi's $4.25 million contract. Even so, the compensation structure of the NHL's offer sheet rules works heavily in Detroit's favor. An offer between $10 million and $11 million would cost the offering team two first-round picks, a second-rounder, and a third-rounder. Anything above roughly $11.94 million triggers a price tag of four first-round selections. Given that Carolina is a perennial contender, those picks would likely fall late in the first round, where the odds of landing an impact player hover around 55 percent. For a franchise that already has Edvinsson on its roster, matching is the obvious play.
It is easy to understand why other teams covet the 6-foot-6, 222-pound Kungsbacka native. Despite dealing with a right knee issue that required two surgeries during the 2025-26 campaign, Edvinsson appeared in 72 games and registered nine goals along with 25 points. He quickly established himself alongside Moritz Seider as one half of what many consider an elite defensive pairing, handling heavy minutes in all situations and serving as a key penalty killer.
Dig into the underlying numbers and his value becomes even more apparent. Over the past two seasons, Edvinsson's 53 even-strength points trail Seider's total of 54 by just a single point, and he achieved that output in 14 fewer games. His nine goals last season included a pair of game-winners, all while receiving almost no power-play time. At just 23, his offensive ceiling remains largely untapped.
The organization has already demonstrated how highly it values the young Swede. Reports surfaced last winter that Detroit refused to include Edvinsson in trade discussions with Vancouver centered around Quinn Hughes, effectively drawing a line in the sand about his place in the franchise's future.
Edvinsson himself has expressed a desire to be part of the solution in Hockeytown. After the Red Wings posted 92 points in 2025-26, their best regular-season total in a decade but still not enough to end a 10-year playoff drought, the defenseman was candid about the sting of falling short. He spoke about working harder than ever over the summer to get his body right and about the connection he has built with Seider on the back end.
With GM Steve Yzerman's young core of Edvinsson, Seider, and Lucas Raymond continuing to mature, the Red Wings view this group as the foundation for their return to playoff contention. Letting any of those pieces walk away, especially to a direct competitor like Carolina, is simply not an option Detroit is willing to entertain. The message to the rest of the NHL has been sent: if you want to offer sheet Simon Edvinsson, go ahead, but be prepared to lose those draft picks for nothing.
