Henrik Zetterberg 's No. 40 isn't retired by the Detroit Red Wings . However, it would appear that the former captain's number is technically out of service.
Goaltender Daniil Tarasov , among the newcomers joining the Red Wings this season, has worn No. 40 during his NHL career. He's doubling down – or doubling up, in this case – with Detroit. Tarasov will be wearing No. 80 on his Red Wings jersey.
Similar to Tarasenko 's Red Wings Arrival
It's reminiscent of Vladimir Tarasenko's arrival in Detroit in 2024. A wearer of No. 91 for most of his NHL days, Tarasenko chose No. 11 for what would be his one season with the Red Wings. Sergei Fedorov's No. 91 remained in mothballs. The Red Wings officially retired Fedorov's number and hoisted No. 91 into the Little Caesars in January of this year.
Tarasov will be the second Red Wings player to wear No. 80. The other was also a goaltender. Michael Hutchinson wore it for his lone game during the 2023-24 season.
Here is a look at the numbers other newcomers are wearing:
Viktor Arvidsson , No. 33
Who wore it last: Goalie Sebastian Cossa wore No. 33 for his only game with the Wings in 2024-25.
Who wore it best: Kris Draper, currently Detroit's assistant general manager and director of amateur scouting, wore No. 33 for 1,137 Red Wings games from 1994-2011. He won four Stanley Cups and the Selke Trophy.
William Wallinder , No. 54
Who wore it last: Bobby Ryan produced 7-7-14 totals in 33 games for the Wings in 2020-21, in what would be his final NHL season.
Who wore it best: We're going to go with Ryan, considering that Detroit's only other No. 54 was Matt Puempel . He played eight games in 2018-19, scoring one goal.
Keegan Kolesar , No. 55
Who wore it last: Niklas Kronwall patrolled the Detroit defense from 2004-2019, winning a Stanley Cup in 2007-08.
Who wore it best: Hall of Famer Larry Murphy won two Stanley Cups and became the NHL defenseman with the most career games played while wearing this number from 1997-2001.
Jacob Bryson , No. 78
Who wore it last: When he plays his first game for the team, the defenseman acquired from the Buffalo Sabres will make franchise history. No Red Wings player has ever worn No. 78.
Who wore it best: By default, it will be Bryson . . . at least until some other Detroit player adorns his jersey with this number.
