Past
Shine, a Pinckney native who played for Northern Michigan, was a career minor leaguer when called up to the NHL by the Red Wings for the first time during the 2024-25 season. He played in nine games and had an assist in limited playing time. Shine was named the captain in Grand Rapids this season and had a career high in goals (21).
He recorded his first NHL goal against the New Jersey Devils , a career highlight he didn't expect would ever happen.
"If I'm being honest with you, I thought it was over," Shine said of his NHL time. "So, it was one thing that I kind of accepted. I love Grand Rapids. My family loves Grand Rapids. So I was OK with kind of just finishing my career there, giving it my all there, and I had kind of given up on it.
"In the back of my mind, obviously, I wanted to. I knew I was playing good. I was like, 'Man, maybe they would just give me a game at the end of the year, or give me something.' But to get that call, it was obviously something I'll never forget."
Present
Shine signed a two-year contract with the Red Wings in January, although he was reassigned to Grand Rapids when the season ended. But he has made an impression throughout his tenure in Grand Rapids, for his leadership and personality, as well as the example of persistence he has set for his young teammates.
"It just shows (to) never give up, honestly," Simon Edvinsson said. "I always thought he was a great, great player, and for him to come up and do what he does up here, it's huge for the team, and he's such a good team player. I'm really, really happy for him."
Future
At 33, Shine is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. But he proved he belonged in the NHL last season and is a valuable organization guy both in Detroit and Grand Rapids.
