William Wallinder made his NHL debut for the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. If you didn't notice him out there, don't feel bad.
That's how he rolls.

The Swedish rookie defenseman isn't one to uncork rink-length rushes. Wallinder won't be physically hammering opponents like Moritz Seider , or wiring slapshots top shelf like Justin Faulk .

Wallinder just goes about his business, quietly, effectively, and without fanfare.
He's the kind of defenseman that every team needs, and every team wants.
A stalwart performer. Which is exactly what Wallinder was in his first NHL game.
There wasn't much to talk about in his stat line. In 9:07 of ice time, Wallinder blocked a shot. He had one giveaway. Oh, he also drew the primary assist on Faulk's goal for his first NHL point and was plus-two.
Detroit goal!
Scored by Justin Faulk with 15:30 left in the 2nd. Assisted by William Wallinder and Lucas Raymond.

For those folks who prefer the analytical approach, Wallinder's SAT percentage of 66.6 is placing him in a tie for third on the team.
"I thought he had a good game," Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. "Wally is a little bit older now. He's played three years of pro. He's probably a little more comfortable in his skin."

Wallinder's Time With Red Wings Has Arrived
Like most young players who aren't considered blue-chip prospects, Wallinder was left to bide his time. He spent three seasons with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins , honing his craft.
"I worked on my defensive side," Wallinder said. "Killing plays faster and being stronger in the corners. Winning more pucks."
His self-assessment sounds a lot like what you hear from NHL bird dogs who get paid to analyze talent.
"I bring a lot of poise with the puck," Wallinder said. "Good skater, just a good two-way defenseman.
"I like to start the rush, good first pass, and just be solid."

Tuesday, Wallinder proved that patience is a virtue. He never complained about the long wait for an NHL opportunity. Instead, he put his focus into being ready to deliver when it came.
"I'm happy where I'm at, and I've been working hard for the last couple years, so I'm ready when I get the chance," Wallinder said.
Tuesday, that chance finally came. And Wallinder delivered the goods.
