The Cincinnati Reds remain one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball. Cincinnati won yet another game on Tuesday, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 12-6. The Reds’ bats got going on Tuesday, in a positive sign for the team’s offense.
Cincinnati scored the most runs it has in a game all season, with 12.
“I’m happy for our guys — and there was some breathing room, and we kind of needed it,” manager Terry Francona said, per MLB.com. “And that’s OK, it’s nice to spread a game out because we haven’t done that very often.”
Elly De La Cruz blasted two home runs in the game for the surging Reds. Cincinnati leads a very competitive NL Central, with a 16-8 record. The club has now won five in a row, despite a somewhat sluggish offense.
“Entering the night, the Reds were last in MLB in average and slugging percentage, 29th in OPS and 26th in runs per game,” the outlet reported.
Even though Cincinnati has lived on pitching and defense, Reds players were not surprised to see the team explode on offense on Tuesday.
“It’s not surprising,” center fielder Dane Myers said. “I think we were due for a breakout game and series. We’ve got a good offensive club. Not quite showing yet, but I think more games like that are going to come.”
If the Reds can keep the offensive momentum going , they will be a tough out in the National League this season. Cincinnati already has one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, with a team ERA of 3.47. That’s good enough for ninth best overall in MLB.
The Reds and Rays play again on Wednesday afternoon, as Cincinnati looks to sweep the series.
