The Cincinnati Reds have been playing without Hunter Greene all season due to an injury. Greene suffered an elbow injury before the regular season , and it was initially revealed that he could potentially return in July . Sure enough, the Reds announced on Thursday that the right-handed pitcher is being sent on a rehab assignment. It seems as if the July return timeline is still realistic as long as no setbacks occur.

Greene, 26, has been one of the best starting pitchers in baseball over the past couple of years. He pitched to a 2.75 ERA in 2024 and 2.76 ERA in 2025. He was an All-Star during the 2024 campaign and even finished eighth in National League Cy Young voting that season. Greene was limited to 19 starts in 2025, but he still pitched well while on the mound.
Updates will continue to be monitored and provided on Hunter Greene 's injury recovery as they are made available.
In other moves, the Reds sent right-handed pitcher Pierce Johnson on a rehab assignment, sent catcher PJ Higgins outright to Triple-A and selected the contract of catcher Will Banfield from Triple-A and optioned him to Triple-A.
Overall, Cincinnati is 35-38 and in last place in the National League Central standings as of this story's writing. The Reds started the season strong, but the team has been inconsistent in recent action. However, they could still make a postseason push, especially if Greene is able to pitch at a high level once he returns from injury.

For now, Cincinnati will focus on its upcoming three-game series against the New York Yankees , which will begin on Friday.
