The Reds entered Thursday's series finale carrying a six-game losing streak and attempting to avoid a four-game sweep after dropping the first three games by one run each — 5–4 on Monday, 3–2 on Tuesday, and 7–6 on Wednesday. Instead, the former first-round pick's outing ended abruptly and created fresh concern for a pitching staff already under pressure.
Lowder worked through three innings, allowing one hit and one run on a solo homer. However, trouble surfaced in the fourth inning when he walked the first two hitters and appeared uncomfortable as his pitch count climbed to 59.
ESPN's Jesse Rogers shared a real-time update on X, formerly Twitter, as the situation unfolded from Wrigley Field.
"Reds starter Rhett Lowder leaves with an apparent injury here in the 4th. Is there anything more that could go wrong for Cincinnati in this series? There's about 5.5 innings left, so maybe."
The update quickly drew attention because of both the timing and the Reds' recent struggles. Shortly after Lowder left the game, reports indicated he exited with right shoulder discomfort, making his status a major concern moving forward.

The Cubs immediately capitalized on the sudden change. After Lowder departed, Chicago erupted for seven runs in the inning, turning a close game into a lopsided contest while currently holding an 8–1 lead in the top of the eighth inning Thursday afternoon.
For the Reds, the injury carries significant implications. Lowder entered the day with a 3–2 record and had shown flashes of promise despite some inconsistency. Now, his health becomes the primary focus as Cincinnati awaits further evaluation.
Ultimately, Lowder's exit adds another challenge for a Reds team searching for stability . If he misses time, Cincinnati may need to adjust its rotation plans quickly during a difficult stretch.
