Report: Coventry City ready to push hard to re-sign star
Coventry City Closing In on Carl Rushworth as Brighton Talks Move Towards Final Details
Coventry City look firmly in front in the race to sign Carl Rushworth, and that is the real story here. Not Newcastle United , not Leeds United , not the usual noise that surrounds any promising goalkeeper. According to TeamTalk, Coventry are now "increasingly confident of completing a permanent deal" for the Brighton goalkeeper, with talks moving beyond the basic question of whether it will happen.

That matters. When negotiations are about structure rather than intent, clubs are already a long way down the road.
Carl Rushworth Deal Moving Towards Conclusion
Rushworth's loan spell at the CBS Arena left a clear impression. Coventry have made him "one of their priority objectives this summer", and there is no mystery why. He knows the club, he knows the demands, and he fits the profile of a goalkeeper ready to take ownership of a side with serious ambitions.

The current discussions are said to be centred on Brighton's protection. The source report states that "the finer details of the deal now the main focus of discussions rather than whether a transfer will happen". That usually means clauses, percentages, and future leverage. In this case, Brighton want "a buy-back clause and a substantial sell-on percentage".

That is standard business for a Premier League club handling a young goalkeeper with upside. Brighton "remain huge admirers of Rushworth" and clearly want cover if he develops into something bigger over the next two or three seasons.
Brighton Position Explains the Delay
Brighton recently triggered an option in Rushworth's contract, extending his stay by another year. It strengthened their hand, which was the point. They were never going to let a 25-year-old goalkeeper with a strong reputation walk into a move without safeguards.

Even so, TeamTalk reports that it "has not prevented Coventry from making significant progress". That line tells you plenty. Coventry have stayed patient, kept the dialogue open, and appear to have convinced both club and player that this is the correct move.

Rushworth himself is "keen on returning to Coventry" and sees the club as "the ideal place to continue his development as a first-choice goalkeeper". Again, this is not complicated. Goalkeepers need games, certainty and trust. Coventry can offer all three.
Coventry City Ahead of Newcastle and Leeds
Newcastle and Leeds have both made enquiries. Fair enough. Good goalkeepers draw attention. But interest and leverage are not the same thing. Coventry believe "their existing relationship with both the player and Brighton has put them in the strongest position to conclude a deal".
That sounds credible. Brighton are planning for Bart Verbruggen to remain number one, and with his immediate future stable, Rushworth's pathway on the south coast is limited. Coventry, by contrast, can hand him the shirt and build with him.

So this now looks like a transfer that will be decided by wording, not by competition. TeamTalk adds that "all parties remain confident an agreement can be reached", and that is usually the sentence worth paying attention to.
Our View
This is exactly the sort of report you want to read. No wild hype, no fantasy, just a deal that makes total football sense. Rushworth was superb for us, and if he comes back permanently it gives the club real stability in a vital position. Supporters saw what he brought last season, composure, authority, and saves that changed matches.
What is especially encouraging is that he apparently wants to return. That counts for plenty. A player who knows the dressing room, knows the crowd, and knows he can thrive here is worth pushing for. If Newcastle and Leeds are hovering around and Coventry still feel confident, that says the groundwork has already been done properly.

Brighton wanting a buy-back and sell-on clause is no shock either. If anything, it is a compliment. They clearly rate him. From a Coventry point of view, that should not be feared. If the club can land a goalkeeper of Rushworth's level now, and get two or three outstanding years from him, that is strong recruitment.
The key thing is simple, get it finished. Championship promotion pushes need reliable players in big positions, and goalkeeper sits near the top of that list. If this deal gets over the line, it will feel like one of the smartest bits of business of the summer.
