Report: Newcastle United ready to move for La Liga defender
Newcastle United Monitor Andrei Ratiu as Transfer Battle Emerges
Newcastle United are tracking Rayo Vallecano defender Andrei Ratiu as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen at the back ahead of the new campaign. According to Marca , the Romania international is firmly on the club's radar, with Liverpool , Barcelona and Nottingham Forest also showing interest.

This feels like the sort of move Newcastle have increasingly explored in recent windows, a player with top-flight pedigree, room to grow and tactical flexibility. Ratiu has built a solid reputation in La Liga, combining reliable defensive work with a willingness to carry the ball forward. That profile will appeal to clubs seeking more than a conventional full-back.
Andrei Ratiu Transfer Interest Grows
The 26-year-old's numbers offer encouragement. He registered four assists in 34 La Liga appearances last season, following a previous campaign that brought two goals and three assists in the same number of league matches. Those returns point to a defender capable of contributing in advanced areas, while his broader game suggests energy, recovery pace and comfort in possession.
One of the key attractions is his versatility. Ratiu can operate at right-back and further forward, which would give Newcastle another tactical option on the flank. His dribbling and passing look well suited to a side that often asks wide players to progress the ball quickly and support attacks from deep positions.

Newcastle United Face Premier League Competition
There is, however, a competitive market developing around him. Liverpool are in the picture and have already frustrated Newcastle earlier this summer by landing Victor Munoz when the Tyneside club had been working on that deal. Forest are also attentive, while Barcelona's name underlines the calibre of attention Ratiu is attracting.
That context matters. Newcastle may need to move decisively if interest hardens into formal talks. The absence of European football could prove a factor in the player's thinking, particularly when rival clubs can offer a broader platform.
Rayo Vallecano Defender Fits Howe Profile
From Newcastle's perspective, the logic is clear. Howe wants defensive reinforcements and Ratiu appears to match several requirements, mobility, end product and defensive commitment. If the club believe he can adapt quickly to Premier League demands, this is a situation worth watching closely over the coming weeks.

Our View
From a Newcastle supporter's point of view, this is a really interesting link because it sounds both sensible and realistic. Andrei Ratiu does not come with the noise of a superstar signing, yet he appears to offer exactly the kind of attributes this squad could use. There is value in adding a player who can defend properly, get up the pitch and cover more than one role.
The frustration, of course, is that Newcastle keep finding themselves in these competitive races. Once Liverpool are involved, and when Barcelona are mentioned too, it becomes harder to feel fully confident. That said, Newcastle still have a strong case if they present a clear role and a convincing plan. Howe has improved players before, and a full-back with technical quality and attacking intent could thrive under him.
The lack of European football is the obvious concern, but regular Premier League minutes can still be a powerful selling point. If the recruitment team see Ratiu as a genuine fit rather than a market opportunity, then this is the type of deal they should push hard on. Supporters will want signs of ambition, and winning a battle like this would send a positive message.
