At 2026 Big Ten Media Day, Maryland Head Coach Buzz Williams took the stage with a blend of hard-earned perspective and sharp optimism as he previewed Year two in College Park. The Terrapins are coming off a grueling 4-16 Big Ten conference campaign, a year one baptism by fire that was derailed almost immediately by critical injuries, most notably losing star power forward Pharrel Payne . Williams offered no excuses for the tough initiation, leaning into his trademark humor to describe the depth of last season's struggles, stating, "We had trouble scoring, we had trouble shooting... pick a category of trouble, we were first in trouble."
Yet rather than letting a difficult inaugural run define the program, Williams and his staff used the adversity as fuel for a comprehensive year two Systematic Reset. The coaching staff executed extreme ownership over every facet of the operation, diagnosing not just baseline execution, but auditing every teaching method, operational workflow, and daily systematic detail to build a revitalized foundation.
Maryland executed a full-scale reset by overhauling its roster, entering the season with 11 newcomers and only four returning players, three of whom saw limited minutes a year ago. To rebuild the core of the program, Williams and his staff assembled a balanced, talentdense incoming group featuring six experienced transfers, four highschool recruits, and one juniorcollege addition. Throughout their portal and preplevel evaluations, the staff emphasized an intangible human metric over raw production (genuine character and the desire to be around one another). They conducted deep background checks to ensure every addition brought a relentless work ethic, helping establish a tight, cohesive culture designed to accelerate the team's development curve.
The heart of Maryland's turnaround centers on the return of power forward Pharrel Payne, who earned Preseason All-Big Ten honors after missing missing the final 21 games of the 2025-26 season because of injury. Payne restores elite interior physicality, rim protection, and low-post scoring to the Terps' front court. Williams delivered glowing praise for his anchor, calling Payne "one of the better human beings" he has ever coached and praising his unwavering loyalty to stay in College Park amidst the chaos of the modern transfer portal. Williams noted that Payne's ability to maintain a transformative vocal leadership role while sidelined cemented his place as the heartbeat of the program.
Payne enters the season as one of Maryland's most important tonesetters, earning Preseason AllBig Ten honors despite missing time last year with an injury. Even while sidelined, he operated as the team's vocal heartbeat and cultural anchor, shaping standards and reinforcing accountability from the bench. His decision to remain loyal to Coach Williams and the program, despite heavy portal interest across the country, underscores both his commitment and the trust he's built within the locker room. Now healthy, Payne reclaims his role as Maryland's physical interior force, providing a highimpact frontcourt presence that stabilizes the defense, elevates the rebounding profile, and gives the offense a reliable anchor inside.
Payne's return is bolstered by 5th-year veteran frontcourt partner Robert Jennings II, who also endured a season-ending hip injury last year. Confined to non-impact rehab where he couldn't run or jump for an entire year, Jennings spent 12 straight months doing nothing but form shooting. That dedicated repetition radically expanded his perimeter range and scoring versatility for his final collegiate season.
Now fully cleared, Jennings and Payne have forged an intense, daily competitive standard in practice. The two veterans lock eyes every morning with a simple mandate, stating, "Yeah, it's another day, let's get to it." During scrimmages, both players actively demand to guard each other on opposing teams, setting a ferocious physical tone for the 11 newcomers.
As the Terrapins look ahead, the program is also preparing to honor its legendary history with the upcoming 25th anniversary of Maryland's 2002 National Championship team. Williams noted that while he has not yet formally presented the milestone to his players, he plans to deeply educate his squad on the lineage of wearing the Maryland uniform. Now 17 months into his tenure in College Park, Williams spoke reverently of Hall of Famer Gary Williams, calling him "the absolute best" mentor for understanding the program's tradition and fiery competitive standard.
That competitive grit will be tested early. Maryland's non-conference slate features a marquee home rivalry game against Georgetown on November 7, a road tilt at Virginia on November 13, and a high-profile showdown against Tennessee. The gauntlet continues immediately in Big Ten play, opening with a grueling first week against Ohio State and Michigan State. Armed with a systemic reset, high-character transfer additions, and healthy veteran anchors in Payne and Jennings, Maryland enters year two with the culture, depth, and edge required to make noise in the Big Ten.
