The Broncos made a decision to go for it on 4th-and-1 and not kick a field goal to try to go up 10-0 on the New England Patriots in the second quarter of the AFC Championship Game .
It proved to be costly as Jarrett Stidham turned the ball over on downs and the Patriots eventually won , 10-7.
For Rex Ryan, he believes Sean Payton relied too heavily on analytics when he elected to keep the offense on the field instead of sending Will Lutz out to kick the field goal.
“Here’s what analytics don’t say: “You don’t have Matt Stafford , you don’t have Tom Brady , you have a backup quarterback that’s always going to be a backup quarterback,” the ESPN analyst said on “Get Up.”
“So to me they don’t take all those things into account,” Ryan continued . “What do we say? Coaching is an art, not a science. They should have kicked the field goal.”
Payton admitted there will always be second thoughts about a call like the one Sunday.
“There’s always regrets, you know?,” he said after the game . “I mean, look, I felt like, here we are, 4th-and-1. We felt close enough — and it’s also a call you make based on the team you’re playing and what you’re watching on the other side of the ball."
Denver thrust Stidham into the starting quarterback role after Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle during overtime of the Broncos ’ AFC Division game win over the Buffalo Bills . Prior to Sunday, Stidham had not thrown a pass since January 2024.
The Broncos were in the driver’s seat by not allowing Drake Maye and the offense to get much going. But blizzard-like conditions in the second half made it difficult for both teams on both sides of the ball.
But an Andy Borregales field goal, Christian Gonzalez interception with 2:18 to go and a Leonard Taylor blocked game-tying field goal made the difference in New England ’s win to punch its ticket to Super Bowl 60.
