First baseman Rhys Hoskins hasn’t played for the Philadelphia Phillies since 2022. However, he played a crucial role in the team’s victory over the Chicago Cubs .
Philadelphia broke out to the tune of a 13-7 victory. For designated hitter Kyle Schwarber , Hoskins’ sage wisdom to the franchise helped change the Phillies’ mindset, via Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
“The words of Rhys Hoskins,” Schwarber said. “It’s always stuck. It’s just, ‘Get to the plate.’ There’s always a chance when you get to the box. Right? Let’s get to the box. There’s always going to be a chance. They’ve been in here, they’ve been putting in the work. They’ve been doing a lot of great things in the cage, and trying to prepare themselves to go out there and compete. They stay on it on a daily basis.”
“And then when you go out there and you finally get your result, it’s not shocking,” he concluded. “Every time they step up to the plate, we think they’re going to do something good. It’s the nature of us.”
Schwarber himself went 2-of-3 with three RBI on Monday with both of his hits being home runs. The Phillies had 15 hits total including one from Alec Bohm – who was in a 0-for-17 slump – and two from Adolis Garcia – who was in an 0-for-13 slump himself – Zolecki noted. Catcher JT Realmuto and outfielder Brandon Marsh led the way with three hits a piece.
Now back at .500 with their 8-8 record, Schwarber and company will look to build off of their momentum. Along the way, they’ll be taking Hoskins’ guidance with them.
