The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed veteran running back Travis Homer from their practice squad to their active roster, the team announced on Saturday.
Homer, 28, played as a practice squad elevation in the Steelers' Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots . He rushed two times for 16 yards, while appearing in just two offensive snaps. He also played 10 snaps of special teams, working on the Steelers kick return, kick coverage and punt return units.
Homer will help offset the loss of running back Rico Dowdle , who has been ruled out for the team's Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday with a toe injury suffered in the loss to the Patriots. Starting running back Jaylen Warren is also questionable to play with a shoulder injury.
Mike McCarthy' s offense will look to put together a more complete performance this time around, with the Steelers sitting 29th in rushing with 149 yards over the first two games and 27th at 3.4 yards per attempt.

Homer, an eighth-year veteran, has appeared 85 games for the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears , starting two. He has 90 career carries for 474 yards and a touchdown, adding 55 catches for 475 yards and two more touchdowns. Homer also brings a good deal of value on special teams.
In addition to signing Homer on Saturday, the Steelers placed offensive guard Gennings Dunker on the injured reserve list and elevated cornerback Doneiko Slaughter and running back Lew Nichols from the practice squad for the team's Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
