The Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday after a 9-19 start to the season. Thomson led the team to three consecutive 90-win seasons and a World Series appearance, but things were getting out of hand to start 2026. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Thomson is not set on leaving the organization entirely.

“Rob Thomson says he wants to stay with the Phillies organization when the time is right, saying he was treated with class and dignity, and loves the city of Philadelphia,” Nightengale reported.

Nightengale came back with a second report, further cementing Thomson’s appreciation for the organization. “Classy Rob Thomson says he had no ill feelings towards Dave Dombrowski reaching out to Alex Cora on Sunday while he was still employed.
‘Dave and I have a close relationship, but that doesn’t stand in the way for him doing the right thing for the organization. I respect that.'”

Thomson spent 27 years with the New York Yankees organization, serving as 1st-base coach, 3rd-base coach, and bench coach. He left alongside Joe Girardi after the 2017 season, joining the former catcher on the Phillies bench in 2018. When Philly fired Girardi during the 2022 season, Thomson took over as the manager. He led them to the World Series that year and was the permanent bench boss after that.

Even consecutive NL East division titles could not keep Thomson amid this dreadful start. The Phillies are ten games under .500, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. Five of those losses, and the lone win, have come against the blistering-hot Atlanta Braves . That has put the team in a brutal hole to start the season.

Bryce Harper was one of the many people in the Phillies organization to glow over Thomson as a person and a coach. That could lead to a reunion with Thomson in the near future.
