Anthony Hill Jr . may be one of the most fascinating youngsters among the players of the defense of the Tennessee Titans, but what Robert Saleh , head coach of the team, knows is that there is no need for the rookie to know everything himself.
Saleh mentioned that Hill has been studying with Cody Barton , a linebacker and experienced player, who can help him adapt to the new pace of the game. The advice of the older player can be more needed now, since Cedric Gray suffers from a concussion.

Hill has the athletic ability to make an immediate impact; however, playing linebacker in Saleh's defense requires more than simply chasing the football. The rookie has to recognize formations, react quickly, and cover plenty of ground from the middle of the defense.
That is where Barton can help. Saleh pointed out that playing MIKE linebacker comes with some advantages because the player is positioned in the middle of the defense. From there, the linebacker gets a chance to see the entire field and show the range that Saleh believes is essential for the position.
Hill is still learning those details , and Barton gives him a veteran presence to lean on. Barton entered the season with considerably more experience than Hill. The veteran was brought in to help lead the linebacker group, while Hill arrived with plenty of physical upside but the normal learning curve that comes with being a rookie.
That relationship could matter more now than it did when the season began. Gray was expected to be an important piece of the Titans' LB group; however, his concussion following a UTV accident has put his availability in question. Hill now has a clearer path to meaningful snaps, and the Titans will need him to be ready if Gray cannot return.
Hill showed plenty during the p reseason and training camp, but regular-season football will give him a different test. Offenses will try to put him in difficult spots, and the speed of the game will force him to make decisions much faster.
The Titans don't necessarily need Hill to know everything immediately but need him to keep improving while using the experience of the players around him. Barton can help with the communication side of the position, while Hill brings the athleticism that made him such an appealing draft pick.
The head coach also sees the MIKE spot as an opportunity for Hill to show exactly what he can do. Being in the middle allows a linebacker to display his range, whether that means attacking downhill against the run or getting into coverage.
For Hill, that makes his development w orth watching even if his role changes from week to week. The Titans have several linebackers who can contribute; however, Hill gives them a different kind of option. He is the younger player with plenty of room to grow, and Barton is the veteran who can help him understand what the defense is asking for.
