The Houston Rockets are set for a matchup on Saturday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder, which could have been a great matchup with each team having the argument to be a top-tier contender at full strength, however, that is far from the truth based on the injuries that both teams have suffered.
The Onslaught of Injuries
Starting with the Rockets, they will be without two key rotational players in center Steven Adams (right soleus strain) and guard Reed Sheppard (low back soreness) on Saturday, which could impact how head coach Ime Udoka manages the rotation.
On the other side, the Thunder are even more beat up as they will be without guards Alex Caruso (right ankle sprain), Cason Wallace (left shoulder labral tear), and Nikola Topic (low back surgery), forward Jalen Williams (left ankle surgery), and centers Chet Holmgren (right knee patellar tendinitis) and Thomas Sorber (right knee surgery).
Looking at all these injuries, it is clear that the Thunder will be significantly more impacted in this game as well as moving forward because Wallace and Williams have injuries that are likely season-ending, Holmgren is set to miss about 8-10 weeks, Sorber and Topic are still recovering from injuries, and Caruso does not have a timeline.
On the Rockets' side, they will just be without Sheppard and Adams, who are solid players in the rotation, but Sheppard is simply managing soreness in his lower back, and Adams is dealing with a right soleus strain, which at this point has him week-to-week until there is a clearer timetable.
Matchups
Based on all the injuries in this game, especially on the Oklahoma City side, it does appear that the Rockets should be in a better position to win this game because more of their key players are in the lineup, especially when it comes to the starters.
Ultimately, this game will likely come down to how Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and center Isaiah Hartenstein play for Oklahoma City as they are going to have to elevate their play against a Rockets team that has solid depth and a lot of talent in the starting lineup.
With that said, the matchups to watch will be Rockets guard Amen Thompson guarding Alexander as well as Houston center Alperen Sengun matching up with Hartenstein on both ends of the floor. Whoever wins these matchups will likely win the game.
The Prediction
Based on the injuries and the fact that this game is in Houston I do believe the Rockets have the edge and that Thompson and Sengun will win their matchups to give the Rockets even more of an advantage.
As far as the margin goes, I believe the Rockets will win this game by about 10-13 points, mainly because Houston is the healthier team right now and does have the benefit of the home crowd while Oklahoma City is not nearly as healthy and is putting players in tough positions.
With that said, this will be an interesting game to watch to see if the Rockets are able to take advantage of the Thunder's injuries or if Oklahoma City can stick with Houston and make this much more of a competitive game. Regardless of who wins this game, this would be a solid win for the Rockets or the Thunder.
