- Rodney Bullard Might Be a Problem for Spartan Opponents

It came down to the wire, but Spartan fans are sure happy to have Rodney Bullard on the field.
After a lengthy eligibility dispute that nearly forced Bullard out of college football despite having played just three seasons, the issue was ultimately resolved by the NCAA before it ever reached the courtroom. Bullard responded by suiting up for Michigan State and turning in a career performance that could be a sign of a monster season to come.

Bullard was just days away from going to court, with the backing of his entire team, to fight for a fourth year of eligibility. A clerical error had indicated that Bullard had accumulated too many college credits to continue playing football, forcing him off the team and leaving him ineligible.
But just two days before the court appearance was scheduled to take place, Michigan State received word that the NCAA had taken a deeper look at Bullard's academic records and determined that its initial ruling was incorrect. The decision was overturned, clearing Bullard to play for the Spartans in Week 1.
Throughout the ordeal, Bullard continued practicing with the team while waiting for the correct ruling on his eligibility. That preparation appeared to pay off, as he entered the season with strong chemistry alongside starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic .
Bullard played in all 12 games for Michigan State last season, finishing with just five receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown.

In the Spartans' season opener, he nearly surpassed all of those numbers in a single game.
Bullard finished with seven receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown, surpassing his entire 2025 season total in receptions, coming just 19 yards shy of his season-long receiving total and matching his lone touchdown.
His touchdown was one of the biggest plays of the game.
With the entire offense rolling out and chaos unfolding around him, Bullard did his job perfectly. He remained still deep in the end zone, allowing the play to develop before Milivojevic found him for the touchdown.
Bullard then followed the touchdown reception with a strong-handed two-point conversion catch, giving Michigan State a seven-point lead with just six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
It wasn't a perfect performance, however.

Bullard made several big catches early, but he also had a couple of costly drops — or near-catches — that could have changed the game.
In the first half, he had what looked like a sure-fire touchdown opportunity on third down, but the ball bounced right off both of his hands on a perfectly placed pass from Milivojevic. Michigan State was forced to settle for a field goal.
Later in the half, Milivojevic fired another perfect laser on third down. The ball traveled through the arms of a defender who was facing away from the play before bouncing off Bullard's right shoulder pad.
The coverage was excellent, and making the catch would have been an impressive play. But those are exactly the types of opportunities Michigan State needs its receivers to capitalize on, especially from a pass-catching group that entered the season without an established superstar.

Still, Milivojevic never lost faith in his receiver.
The quarterback continued going back to Bullard, especially when Michigan State needed a play the most. That trust ultimately paid off with the fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion that helped put the Spartans in position to win.
Bullard entered Week 1 with plenty to prove.
After spending the offseason unsure whether he would even be allowed to play another season of college football, he made the most of his opportunity when it finally arrived.
The Spartans entered the season with a wide receiver room full of players who were largely unproven to the outside world.

After one game, Rodney Bullard is giving everyone a reason to start paying attention.
If Week 1 was any indication, Bullard may not just be another piece of Michigan State's offense.
He might be a problem for Spartan opponents all season long.
