The San Francisco Giants must address more than the leading spots on their roster this offseason.
They also need pitchers who can absorb unplanned innings , dependable coverage around the infield and bench players capable of giving manager Tony Vitello practical alternatives.

JoJo Romero could help satisfy San Francisco's need for reliable bullpen depth. The free agent left-hander should receive serious consideration from the Giants as his market develops.
How Romero fits with Giants
Romero strengthened his value with an excellent postseason performance.
The 30-year-old finished October with a 2-1 record, 1.13 ERA and 0.50 WHIP in eight innings over seven appearances. He recorded 11 strikeouts against one walk while allowing one earned run and surrendering three hits.
Romero also pitched effectively during the regular season for the Milwaukee Brewers , who acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline.

Following the trade, he went 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 13.1 innings across 11 regular-season appearances, adding three holds.
Between St. Louis and Milwaukee, Romero went 3-3 with a 3.36 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 23 holds in 56.1 innings over 55 appearances. He collected 54 strikeouts, issued 18 walks and held opposing hitters to a .238 batting average.
His success was not limited to one season. Romero has finished with an ERA of 3.68 or lower in each of the past four years.
That sustained performance has turned him into a dependable left-handed workhorse with a healthy Strikeout-to-walk Ratio (K/BB) and an established ability to limit opposing hitters.

Romero's upside
Romero does not overpower batters with pure velocity. Instead, he relies primarily on a sinker and sweeper whose movement produces one of the outcomes every pitching staff values: ground balls.
That approach would fit Oracle Park and give San Francisco a reliever capable of escaping difficult situations without depending exclusively on strikeouts.
Ground balls can produce quick outs, limit damaging contact and create opportunities for double plays when runners reach base.
Romero would also provide Vitello with a left-handed option who does not need to be reserved for one narrow matchup. His workload shows that he can appear regularly, while his control reduces the risk of extending innings through unnecessary walks.

His postseason work demonstrated that increased pressure does not require him to abandon his identity. Romero continued trusting his sinker and sweeper while attacking hitters during Milwaukee's World Series run.
San Francisco still needs late-inning help and additional pitching throughout the staff. Romero would not solve every bullpen problem, but his consistency, control and ability to generate ground balls could make him one of the Giants' most dependable relievers.
