- Roster Move: 49ers Part Ways With Veteran CB
The San Francisco 49ers officially finalized their blockbuster reunion with Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on Wednesday, but bringing the former first-rounder back to Santa Clara required a casualty on the active 53-man roster.
That roster crunch landed directly on veteran cornerback Jack Jones, whom the team released to clear a spot for Buckner.

While parting with defensive back depth midseason is always a calculated risk, Jones' departure comes as little surprise to anyone who tracked his performance during Sunday's 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
The Week 7 Breaking Point in Atlanta
Jones logged rotational defensive snaps across seven weeks for San Francisco, but his outing in Atlanta proved to be the final straw.
Stepping into boundary coverage for 22 snaps at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Jones was repeatedly targeted by Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The metrics reflected a rough afternoon on the perimeter:

-
Targeted 5 times: Allowed 4 receptions for 39 yards.
-
Penalties: Tagged with two flags (one declined), repeatedly hurting defensive stands.
-
PFF Metrics: Earned a 27.0 coverage grade and a 27.3 overall defensive grade, the lowest marks on the unit.
With San Francisco generating a season-low three total pressures against Atlanta, they simply could not afford coverage lapses or penalty yardage on the outside.
Prioritizing Dominance in the Trenches
John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have built their defensive identity around winning along the defensive line. When the opportunity arose to acquire Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts for a 2027 fourth-round pick, the front office jumped without hesitation.
Carrying surplus cornerbacks who struggle in rotational snaps became an unnecessary luxury compared to solidifying a defensive interior that needed immediate pass-rush juice and run-stopping discipline alongside Osa Odighizuwa and James Thompson Jr.

What's Next for the 49ers' Secondary?
Releasing Jones leaves the 49ers slightly thinner on the boundary, but it opens the door for younger talent to step forward over the Week 8 bye.
Rookie cornerback Ephesians Prysock and second-year defensive back Renardo Green are expected to see elevated roles as rotational pieces behind star starter Deommodore Lenoir. With two full weeks of practice before facing the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris will have ample time to reconfigure the coverage alignments while integrating Buckner into the defensive front.
For Jones, the 28-year-old will hit waivers looking for a fresh start. For San Francisco, the move marks a clean break from a struggling contributor in exchange for an All-Pro caliber anchor up front.
