Connor Seabold 's start to the 2026 season has been the epitome of instability. He's already pitched for two teams, being designated for assignment just as many times in the span of a month. Now finding himself with a third club after the Kansas City Royals acquired him from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
For Seabold, the move creates another opportunity. For the Royals, it says quite a bit about where their pitching staff currently stands.

Kansas City did not acquire Seabold because he is expected to immediately transform the bullpen. The more revealing part of the trade is that the Royals have reached a stage of the season where simply finding reliable innings has become increasingly important.
Carlos Estévez , James McArthur and Nick Mears remain unavailable out of the bullpen. While Stephen Kolek helped stabilize things with 7 1/3 scoreless innings against Houston on Sunday, the relief corps has spent much of the last several weeks absorbing extra work.
That reality likely played a significant role in Kansas City's decision to target Seabold.
"Another guy with some experience to be able to fit in the middle of the game," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said, via The Kansas City Star's Jaylon Thompson . "Give us some length at times."

Seabold has spent much of his professional career operating as a starter, swingman or multi-inning option. Even though he has primarily worked in shorter relief appearances this season, the Royals appear interested in the flexibility he provides rather than assigning him to a specific bullpen role.
"We're not going to designate a role for him," Quatraro added, via Thompson .
The transaction also reflects something that has quietly followed Seabold throughout the season. Despite modest surface-level numbers, organizations continue finding reasons to take a chance on him.
After opening the year with the Detroit Tigers , Toronto traded for him rather than waiting for him to clear waivers. Now, Kansas City has done the same. Seabold's velocity has ticked up this season while his underlying contact metrics have remained encouraging enough to attract interest around the league.

The Royals are betting those traits can translate into value for a bullpen that currently ranks near the bottom of the American League in ERA.
There is little risk attached to the move. Kansas City parted with 21-year-old pitching prospect Denis Samudio, who had spent the season in Single-A and the Arizona Complex League. In return, the Royals acquired a pitcher with major league experience, a four-pitch mix and a chance to contribute immediately.
Whether Seabold ultimately sticks remains to be seen.
What is clear is that the opportunity now sitting in front of him exists because the Royals no longer have the luxury of being overly selective about bullpen help. At a time when healthy innings have become harder to find, Seabold arrives with a chance to provide exactly what Kansas City needs most.
