The Chicago Cubs recently lost Aaron Bummer to free agency after he opted out of his minor league contract with the team. Just a few days later, he found a new opportunity with the Kansas City Royals , just weeks before the August 3 trade deadline.
Reports indicate that Bummer, who is 32 years old, signed a minor league contract with the Royals on Monday, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Bummer is headed to Triple-A Omaha.
" Aaron Bummer agrees to minor league deal with Royals," Heyman said. "Reported to Omaha today."

Bummer is a 10-year veteran who has played for the Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves from 2017 to 2026. While he was on the Cubs ' minor league roster, he never did play a major league game for the club this year.
The 2026 campaign has been a rough one for Bummer. He made 19 appearances with the Braves before the organization released him in the middle of the season. Through 15.1 innings pitched, he owns a 7.63 ERA and 1.826 WHIP. After a short stint with the Cubs, a fresh start in Kansas City may rejuvenate his status in MLB.
He joins the Royals' minor league system with a career 3.94 ERA and 1.335 WHIP with 442 strikeouts. For now, it appears the veteran left-hander will remain at Triple-A Omaha until further notice.
In the meantime, the organization will remain focused on the season at hand. The Royals aim to bounce back in a game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday after suffering a 19-2 blowout loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
