After weeks of speculation, the Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, the opening day of the NHL's free agency period.
And now, general manager Stan Bowman has offset some of the loss that the trade of Nurse had left in the defensive units. The Oilers are signing former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ryan Shea to a five-year contract with a salary cap hit of $4 million.
Shea, who is 29 years old, is now signed through the end of the 2030-31 NHL season.
Shea was taken with the 121st overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks , who had just won the Stanley Cup only weeks prior. He would go on to play several seasons with the Northeastern Huskies, and later signed an entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars . Following three years with the Stars organization, he signed a one-year contract to join the Penguins in 2023.
He would eventually sign two straight one-year extensions to remain with the Penguins, but has now landed the largest contract of his career thus far.
Last season with the Penguins, he appeared in 80 games and scored six goals to go with 29 assists for 35 points, while also accumulating 22 penalty minutes. So far in 150 career NHL games, he's scored nine goals with 32 assists.
During Pittsburgh's opening round series loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal, Shea got his first Stanley Cup Playoff experience. He skated in all six games, and registered a single assist with two penalty minutes.
