Rye football brings fireworks in season-opening win over Cornwall

RYE - Bright colors lit up the sky, the various patterns and resplendent clusters creating a picturesque backdrop in the distance.
That was, of course, the fireworks show that Rye Playland puts on each Friday. It started around 9 p.m., but on this night, it essentially was an encore.

Because the real fireworks display had started earlier about a mile away at the high school football field, which Rye turned into its own play land.
With a panoply of explosive plays and its stars shining, the Garnets lit it up in a 39-21 win over Section 9's Cornwall in their season opener.
"The players worked hard all offseason in preparation," coach Dino Garr said on Sept. 4. "We knew (Cornwall) wouldn't make it easy and we anticipated a battle, but everyone came together and did their job. And they made it exciting."

This was a hyped rematch of a state semifinal last fall, when Rye ran through Class A for an undefeated season. But with the graduation of several standouts, including some record-setting greats, it was reasonable to wonder how this version of the team would fare.

Well, the first exam was passed with, umm, flying colors.
Charlie Brady, in his debut as the starting quarterback, rushed for five touchdowns to lead the Garnets. Three of those runs were worthy of the highlight reel, the senior dancing through the defense and then looking like a sprinter in the open field.
"It feels amazing and I'm obviously really excited," Brady said, "but it's about the team. Our offensive line really stepped up, and the defense did a great job."
Indeed, it was a superb effort collectively, the kind that might've been deflating for anyone who hoped there would be a significant regression this season.

"It's a testament to the strength of the program," center Evans Anderson said of the Garnets being a perennial contender despite roster turnover. "There's talent at every level throughout the program, and we've got people that want to step up and be great."
Takeaways
Anderson and right tackle Benji Kaplan are the only returning starters to the offensive line. Nevertheless, that unit dominated and cleared paths for Brady and running back Jagger Fenton to create chunk plays. Teammates praised the performance of Ryan Proulx, Jake Schonberg and Stepan Kelly, who stepped into new roles and flourished, helping anchor the line.
"Our coaching staff deserves a lot of props for getting those guys ready," Brady said. "AJ Thompson is our line coach and he does a great job of developing them."

The staff obviously also does well developing quarterbacks. Carson Miller last season set Section 1 records for passing yards and touchdowns, and Brady could be prolific as a dual-threat playmaker.
"He's a tremendous athlete and he's been a good player for us; he was just waiting his turn," Garr said of Brady. "He's been ready and couldn't wait for his chance to show what he can do."
Rye also played well defensively, particularly in the second half when they didn't allow a score until the final minute. The Garnets beat Cornwall 35-7 in the state semifinals last November, so they braced for an opponent that would be eager for revenge. "We knew we had to match that intensity," Anderson said.
Tyler Walsh had two pass breakups on deep shots, including one in the end zone. Anderson had a sack and Graham Durkin had two tackles for loss. Nick Holahan forced a fumble that Eric Ellman recovered, setting up Max An's 1-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 39-14 with 11:52 remaining. At that point, the Garnets began to pull some starters.

Cornwall briefly led 7-6 when Sage Caesar's screen pass to Michael Cooper went for a 28-yard touchdown to open the second quarter. But the Garnets immediately responded, Brady sending the home crowd into a tizzy with a 56-yard touchdown run that put Rye ahead for good.
Brady, on a keeper, shot through the middle of his line, then shook a defender and cut outside before outrunning angles along the sideline and dashing to the end zone.
"They blocking was so good," Brady said, "that once I got to the second level, I'd juke or make a move, and I was out of there."
Caesar threw a 12-yard touchdown to Matthew Breheny that pulled the Dragons within 19-14 going to halftime, and the quarterback scored from the 1 with a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Player of the game
Brady demonstrated his poise and elusiveness, consistently avoiding pressure and make sound decisions as a passer, along with rushing for more than 200 yards. He had breakaway touchdowns of 56, 55 and 38 yards, scintillating runs that gave fans and observers a glimpse of his abilities.
"It's fun to make a block then look up and see him all the way down field, making people miss," Anderson said. "It gives us a sense of security, knowing that we've got guys behind us who can make the most of our blocks and do something special."

"I live right near (Rye Playland)," Brady said with a smile, "so I've seen those fireworks every Friday over the years, and it's awesome."

Next up
The Garnets visit Clarkstown South on Thursday, 7:30 p.m. for what is expected to be a showdown against a fast-rising contender in Class A.
